The struggling but beloved donut shop opened by the late J Dilla's uncle is closing after a lengthy hiaitus.

Dilla's Delights, on John R in the flatiron building, temporarily closed at the start of the pandemic, owner Herman Hayes said in an Instagram video. That closure is now permanent.

"We don't quite know which direction we're going to go in and where we're going to be, but, you know, we're working on some things," he said in an Instagram post this week. "We're looking for a home. We're homeless!"

The business previously shut for a period when Hayes was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. It reopened just before the pandemic hit after raising nearly $18,000 via a GoFundMe campaign. The money was to go toward pay back rent and future lease payments, he said.

At the time, Hayes said the business would leave the location at the end of its lease, partly because it had lost its production area in the building and had to move it off-site.
