As of Friday, 82.7% of adult intensive care beds were occupied statewide by 2,121 patients -- including 735 with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, according to the Department of Health and Human Services' daily capacity report. Three hundred and fifty-five of the 735 were on ventilators.

Even though just under 29% of ICU patients had Covid or were presumed positive, the data shows some hospitals can't handle many more severely ill patients.

Overall, 80% of Michigan's 21,473 adult in-patient beds were filled, based on reports from all but 7 percent of hospitals. That includes 3,780 confirmed and suspected Covid cases (18%).

Seven hospitals in the tricounty Detroit area were at 90% to 99% capacity Thursday, with beds filled by Covid patients and others (list below). In Tawas, on Lake Huron above the Thumb, all 47 beds at Ascension St. Joseph were full -- including five occupied by Covid victims.

Regional breakdowns show the current number of confirmed and suspected coronavirus hospital admissions in nine parts of the state. Below is Friday's state data for Southeast Michigan, where hospitals have the largest influx of Covid cases since last spring:

Wayne, Washtenaw, Monroe counties: 1,078 adult patients and 24 children; 225 of the adults were in ICUs, including 140 on ventilators

Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair: 1,217 adult patients and 7 children; 179 of the adults were in ICUs, including 86 on venilators

Metro Detroit's most-crowded hospitals:

  • Henry Ford Macomb, Clinton Township: 99% full; 173 Covid patients, including 29 in ICU
  • Beaumont, Royal Oak: 95% full; 193 Covid patients, including 16 in ICU
  • Harper/Hutzel, Detroit: 95% full; 37 Covid patients, with 13 of them in ICU
  • Ascension Macomb-Oakland, Warren: 93% full; 88 Covid patients, including 10 in ICU
  • McLaren Macomb, Mount Clemens: 92% full; 66 Covid patients, with 10 in ICU
  • Ascension St. John, Detroit: 91% occupancy; 82 Covid patients, with 15 in ICU
  • Ascension Novi: 90% full; 52 Covid patients, including 5 in intensive care
