CDC chief: Michigan should shut down to stem virus surge

April 12, 2021, 5:15 PM

The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised Michigan to shut down in response to a worst-in-the-nation surge in coronavirus cases, saying vaccines alone cannot stem the tide.

The comment was made by director Rochelle Walensky during a Monday White House briefing, just as the state added another nearly 9,700 new cases and 12 deaths over a two-day period.

From CNBC:

“I think if we try to vaccinate our way out of what is happening in Michigan, we would be disappointed that it took so long for the vaccine to work, to actually have the impact.” ... It takes several weeks for immunizations to kick in and reduce the caseload, she noted.

The state’s best bet, Walensky said, “is to really close things down.”

In keeping with a plan to avoid imposing further Covid restrictions, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday asked schools and restaurants to consider a two-week pause on in-person learning and indoor dining.
