The Fenster family of Metro Detroit expressed hope Monday after learning that U.S. citizen Nathan Maung, a journalist in Mynamar, has been released from prison in the Southeast Asian nation. He had been detained since March.

Maung, who has dual citizenship in Myanmar, is due to fly to the U.S. on Tuesday, his lawyer tells Reuters. Maung, co-founder of Kamayut Media in Myanmar, had been one of two American journalists imprisoned by military coup leaders in that Southeast Asian nation. Danny Fenster, a 37-year-old from Huntington Woods, is the other.

Fenster, managing editor of Frontier Myanmer, has now been detained in a prison for three weeks. The family has been pleading through the media for the government to release Danny, and has been in regular touch with the State Department and lawmakers, including Congressman Andy Levin, D-Bloomfield Hills

"We're just so happy for him and his family," brother Bryan Fenster of Huntington Woods tells Deadline Detroit Monday morning, commenting on Maung's release. "We just hope it's positive momentum for Danny's case."

Fenster was arrested May 24 at the Myanmar airport and taken to Insein Prison near Yangon, where political prisoners are held. He had been planning to surprise his family with a visit.

"We're getting a glimmer of hope for Danny," his mother, Rose Fenster, said after learning of Maung's release. "We remain cautiously hopeful and optimistic for some good news."
