The Canadian government finally is opening its border, closed since March 2020.

Covid-vaccinated U.S. citizens can enter Aug. 9 for nonessential travel, the Ottawa government announced Monday. Vaccinated citizens from other countries will be allowed in Sept. 7 if conditions remain favorable, a media release says.

With the advent of increased vaccination rates in Canada, declining Covid-19 cases and reduced pressure on health care capacity, the government intends to bring a number of changes into effect, provided that Canada's Covid-19 epidemiology remains favourable.

"This announcement is not only great news for Michigan"s cross-border communities and binational families – but also for our economy," tweets Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich..

Canada said fully vaccinated travelers must:

► Provide Covid-19-related information electronically through ArriveCAN (app or web portal) including proof of vaccination before leaving for Canada (subject to limited exceptions).

► Meet the pre-entry testing requirements: Be asymptomatic upon arrival and have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French.

Children under 12 or unvaccinated dependent children, due to a mental or physical condition, can enter if with a fully vaccinated parent, step-parent, guardian or tutor.

Americans will be banned if not fully vaccinated.
