Detroit City Council member Andre Spivey, who faces a federal bribery charge, is scheduled to plead guilty Sept. 28.

Court records show a plea hearing is set for 3 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Victoria A. Roberts.

Spivey, who did not seek re-election, will be required to step down after his guilty plea. Michigan law forbids a person from holding local or state office for 20 years after they've been convicted of a felony involving dishonesty, deceit, fraud or a breach of the public trust.

Spivey's third four-year term runs through this year. He was charged late last month with conspiracy to commit bribery after he and an unnamed staffer allegedly accepted more than $35,000 "with the intent to be influenced and rewarded in connection with upcoming votes."

The U.S. Attorney's Office charged him under a criminal "information," which means Spivey waived his right to a grand jury review and intended to plead guilty.

His attorney, Elliott Hall, has said that that Spivey has cooperated with federal authorities. To date, no one else has been charged in the case.

Hall did not immediately return a call Wednesday for comment.

Spivey, a Central Michigan University graduate ('12), was a church pastor in Belleville from 2000-03 and in Detroit from 2003-18.
