"Steve was one of a kind," posts Judge Chandra Baker, a former prosecutor who last November won a six-year term on Wayne County Circuit Court. "Steve was a huge part of my campaign behind the scenes and without his help I'm not sure I would be judge now."

The University of Michigan and Wayne State Law School alumna adds: "I had not seen Steve for years before I ran into him in 2019 when I began my campaign, yet on that day he told me 'I will do whatever I can to get you elected because I think you will be a great judge.'"

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans posts Friday on social media: "Though Steve and I sometimes disagreed, we both shared a passion for service to Detroit and Wayne County, particularly its young people."

His Macomb counterpart, Mark Hackel, also pays respects on Facebook: "I had the privilege of having Steve interview me many times, he had a positive impact on me and everyone around him. His voice will be missed, but never forgotten."

In a statement, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer calls Hood "a titan in the city of Detroit" and adds, in part: "Steve lived the spirit of Detroit through his deeds and actions. Everything that he did had a positive impact on those around him."

Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, a fellow Detroiter, says Friday: "Steve was a mentor to many. I consider myself lucky to have been able to spend countless hours in his presence learning about the policy and politics that can enable endless possibility and potential in the city that we call home."
