Michigan agencies are bracing for the arrival of hundreds of Afghan refugees who fled the country in recent weeks.

Bethany Christian Services, a Grand Rapids-based adoption and resettlement agency, expects to resettle about 150 refugees in west Michigan, Ted Roelofs of Bridge Michigan reports.

And the Detroit-based Samaritas, a social service agency, is gearing up to resettle at least a few hundred Afghans, mostly in southeast Michigan and the Grand Rapids area.

Both agencies say they've gotten lots of offers of support.

Susan Kragt of Bethany Christian Services tells Bridge:

“We are overwhelmed with support at this point. We have people who want to donate furniture, clothes, food, hygiene products, just welcome kits in general.

“We had several offers to provide housing. This includes people who have volunteered to host families in their homes and those who have rental or vacation properties.”
