The semester has a shaky start at four Metro Detroit high schools listed on a weekly state report of Covid outbreaks in education settings.
A half-dozen Renaissance High students on Detroit's west side tested positive for the virus during the past week, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. School had been in session just four days since Aug. 23, but the district reported an outbreak among football players last week.
In Oakland County, four students are affected at Avondale High in Auburn Hills; three girls at Marian High, a parochial school in Bloomfield Hills; and two teens at Troy High.
The "School-Related Outbreak Report" from Lansing lists all schools with at least two Covid patients "who may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households. Case counts for school-related outbreaks include those associated with before and after-school programs."
Statewide, the health agency lists 31 new school outbreaks were reported Tuesday by state health officials, a more than three-fold increase from last week's numbers.
The state Tuesday afternoon reported 26 new outbreaks at K-12 schools, two at higher education institutions, one at an administrative building and two at intermediate school districts -- up from nine the previous weeks.
A Midland elemetary school had 23 infections among students and staff during the past week. Eastern Michigan University has 16 new student cases, while Adrian College has 11.
