As Covid cases rise in Michigan, the news is not good when it comes to children and adolescents.
Sixty-nine Michigan children are hospitalized with confirmed or suspected cases of Covid-19. That's a 54-percent increase since Nov. 3, the Detroit Free Press reports.
As of Friday, 31 of the cases were in a six-county Southeast Michigan region that includes Wayne, Oakland and Macomb.
From the Detroit Free Press:
"We are a little bit on edge at this point," said Dr. Rudolph Valentini, a pediatric nephrologist at Children's Hospital of Michigan tells the Freep. "We currently are managing. It's absolutely manageable, but ... it appears as though there's trouble around the corner."
He estimates than one-third to half of the pediatric cases require intensive care unit treatment and a fair number require ventilators to support breathing.
The latest numbers are near the pandemic peak of 71 on April 20.
In another reflection of the situation, Ann Arbor Public Schools close next Monday and Tuesday due to an "alarming increase in staff and student Covid-19 cases," Superintendent Jeanice Swift told parents and staff via email. "As a Covid mitigation step to interrupt transmission and allow sick individuals to recuperate, we will amend the AAPS school schedule for next week [with] an extension to the traditional Thanksgiving school break."
