Even during a holiday week when students had time off, fresh Covid clusters were reported at 19 schools in the tricounty Detroit region.

A weekly state roundup, which reflects some earlier diagnoses documented since last Monday, includes 115 pandemic infections.

The largest group locally is from Detroit's Martin Luther King High School, which reported 25 positive cases among students and staff from before Thanksgiving week.

Two other city public schools also had newly reported Covid illnesses -- nine students at Collegiate Prep High School on the northwest side and seven elementary pupils at Catherine Blackwell Institute in the east-side Kettrering neighborhood. The district was shut all of last week because of Covid concerns and to provide a chance for intensive sanitizing.

Oakland has 32 newly listed cases at seven schools, while Wayne County outside Detroit has 27 at six schools. In Macomb, two elementary schools and Fraser High have a total of 15 Covid illnesses.

King High in Detroit is the only new metro-area cluster larger than single digits.

Michigan school-related outbreaks since Nov. 22 affecting at least three people are listed here by the Department of Health and Human Services.
