Michigan Hits a Record 20,346 Daily Covid Cases in Past 2 Days; 4,797 Now in Hospitals

As predicted, Michigan Covid cases are spiking at an alarming rate.

The state reported a total of 40,692 cases for Thursday and Friday for a record daily average of 20,346 cases. During that same two-day stretch, the state recorded 259 deaths, including 136 earlier ones identified during a vital records review.

Since the pandemic started in Matrch 2020, the state has recorded 1,636,611 cases and 27,822 deaths. Among those stricken by the virus, nearly 1.3 million are classified as recovered.

Hospitalizations in the state are rising dramatically.

Statewide figures show 4,662 adults and 135 pediatric patients hospitalized with Covid symptoms Friday. The adult total is 10% higher than Monday, while pediatric cases jumped by 28% (28 adolescents and kids).

In six Southeast Michigan counties in and around Metro Detroit, the latest state health department data lists 2,824 adults and 99 teens or children with confirmed or suspected coronavirus.

The combined regional figures are 61% of the state total and 275 patients (10%) higher than at the this week's start four days ago.

A notable rise in pediatric cases came this week in Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties, which are grouped into one of the state's eight hospital regions. Pandemic patients 18 or younger nearly tripled from 11 on Monday to 31 on Friday.

The number of Covid patients needing intensive care units rose 7% statewide this week to 858 and by 9% in Southeast Michigan to 428. 

Nationally, the number of Americans hospitalized with Covid passed 126,000 this week — the highest level in a year. The number of pediatric Covid in-patients has doubled since Christmas to a seven-day average of 3,800 children and adolescents The Washintongton Post reports.
