A new quick-serve sandwich shop near Rivertown Market in Detroit skips a standard ingredient -- bread.

Breadless, the Black-owned business that launched last week at 2761 E. Jefferson Ave., serves vegetarian and meat sandwiches wrapped in leafy greens such as red swiss chard, turnip greens, collard greens and dino kale. It has been in the works since late 2020, created by local partners in their 30s.

The goal was "a place that would be the home for those like me who have always had to order off of the menu due to their dietary preferences or restrictions," posts Marc Howland, 33, of Detroit, one of three founders.

Six sandwiches, priced at $10.19 to $11.29, include the Cloud 9 Pastrami -- collards, pastrami, Havarti cheese, shredded savoy cabbage, pickle, red onions, spicy ground mustard and house-made Reuben sauce, and the Garden of Eatin -- collards, roasted eggplant, sautéed peppers, tomato, onion and tomato pesto.

Co-founder LaTresha Staten Howland, 31, of Detroit.

"Everyone in every neighborhood should have access to healthy, low-carb meals," the shop's site says. "Because it shouldn’t matter if you’re gluten-free, vegan, keto, Whole30 TM, or just plain tired of ordering off the menu — everyone deserves to eat good."

The startup won a $50,000 Motor City Match grant in January.
