Detroit's Award-Winning Ochre Bakery and Astro Coffee Are Calling It Quits

Detroit's award-winning Ochre Bakery, which opened on Grand River and 16th Street in Detroit's Core City neighborhood in April 2019, is closing. So are the owners' coffee shops -- Astro Roastery coffee shop next door and the Michigan Avenue store.

"We have come to the end of this journey," the owners wrote on Instagram on Wednesday. "It’s hard to really know what to say in these moments, but we are forever grateful for all of the love and support we have been shown over the last 11 years of having a business in this city.

"For the customers, growers, partners and employees past and present, we could not have been blessed with a better community to be a part of.

"To every one of our team members, we are so thankful, grateful, humbled by your skill, hard work and dedication. There truly are not enough words to say thank you. Our last day of service will be Sunday May 15."

Astro Coffee opened in Corktown in 2011 and closed in 2020 temporarily. The owners opened Astro Roastery next to Ochre Bakery and later reopened the Michigan Avenue shop.

Owners Jessica Hicks and Dai Hughes helped bring alive the long-neglected neighborhood around Grand River and 15th -- a once thriving area that was decimated by the 1967 riots.

Bon Appetit magazine named Ochre one of the country’s top ten new restaurants in 2019.
