Many folks in Michigan are convinced Covid is over, but the virus isn't buying that.

Mutations of the prevailing omicron coronavirus variants are increasingly showing up in Michigan, state health officials say. At least a half-dozen subvariants had been detected as of Friday, the Detroit Free Press writes.

"What was omicron in January is not what omicron is now. There have been these changes with omicron that have fine-tuned what it does, and some of them are better able to spread than the original omicron," Dr. Adam Lauring, an associate professor of infectious diseases and microbiology at the University of Michigan, tells the Freep.

That may explain the uptick in cases.

The seven-day average of new daily coronavirus cases in Michigan has risen 239 percent in one month, state data shows — from 799 on April 6 to 2,706 on May 4. Hospitalizations are also up.

Health officials hope the new variants cause less severe illness.
