On Friday, a day before visitation began for slain Detroit Police officer Loren Courts, the department held a vigil outside the west side's 2nd Precinct, also called the Schaefer Station.

Among attendees were parents Larry and Lillian Courts, widow Kristine Courts and their children Darian, 15, and daughter Devyn, 9, and brother Larry Courts Jr.

Chief James White spoke at the one-hour gathering on Lesure Street at Grand River Avenue to honor the precinct member killed July 6 by a teen gunman.

Dignitaries, law enforcers and other community members can pay respects from noon-8 p.m. Saturday and from 3-9 p.m. Sunday at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. 7 Mile Rd., west of Berg Road.
