Before reportedly hanging himself in a Manhattan jail, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sent a letter to Larry Nassar, the Michigan State University gymnastics team doctor convicted of sexually assaulting female athletes who came for treatment, the Associated Press reports.

AP reports that Epstein, who was awaiting trial, sent a letter to Nassar, but it was returned to Epstein's jail unopened after his death. Epstein died Aug. 19, 2019.

AP obtained more than 4,000 pages of documents related to Epstein’s death from the federal Bureau of Prisons under the Freedom of Information Act.

“It appeared he mailed it out and it was returned back to him,” the investigator who found the letter, told a prison official by email, AP reports. “I am not sure if I should open it or should we hand it over to anyone?”

The letter itself was not released.

Nassar, 59, is currently serving time in a federal prison in Sumterville, Fla.

AP also reported:

The night before Epstein’s death, he excused himself from a meeting with his lawyers to make a telephone call to his family. According to a memo from a unit manager, Epstein told a jail employee that he was calling his mother, who’d been dead for 15 years at that point.
