Michigan Republican Congressman John James repeatedly danced around questions by CNN's Wolf Blitzer Tuesday when asked if he thought it was wrong for President Donald Trump to pardon or commute sentences of violent Jan. 6 protesters who attacked police at the U.S. Capitol.

"President Trump has focused squarely on the future and I firmly believe that's where most Americans are right now," James said, sidestepping the question. "We absolutely must support our police, we absolutely must support law enforcement and we absolutely must move our nation forward. I support the police and so is everybody else here."

James went on to say:

John James on CNN Tuesday night

'The Capitol Police whom I've met here have been a part of keeping my family, my friends safe and the capitol each and every single day and we applaud their efforts."

Blitzer continued to press him for a direct answer, asking James:

"So what kind of message, congressman do these pardons and commutations send to law enforcement? You support law enforcement yet these people who attacked law enforcement on January 6th are now going to be free."

James again sidestepped the question, saying:

"You know leftists weren't too concerned with attacks and law enforcement when we saw them getting cold cocked on New York street cities during BLM riots a couple years ago. If you're going to be upset with one you ought to be upset with the other. We call that hypocrisy. Right now now we're focused on moving forward and not making the same mistakes in the past ,and that's what we're going to be doing."
