Oh Rats! Beloved Lafayette Coney Island Temporarily Closes Again Because of Rat Infestation

January 24, 2025, 11:41 PM by  Allan Lengel

For the second time in a little over two years, the beloved Lafayette Coney Island in downtown Detroit has temporarily closed because of rat infestation.

The Detroit Health Department on Friday announced the closure on its Facebook page.

The Detroit Health Department has been working closely with Lafayette Coney Island to temporarily close their restaurant to address a rat infestation issue.

As a result, an inspection was completed and Lafayette Coney Island has voluntarily shut-down until all violations are corrected, which includes a plan of action to prevent future violations.

During this closure, the restaurant will undergo thorough cleaning, and address all structural issues, including permanently sealing all openings to the outdoors. Our priority is to protect the public's health and ensure that the establishment meets all safety standards before reopening. We appreciate the cooperation of Lafayette Coney Island as we work together to safeguard the well-being of Detroit residents and visitors.

A sign on the door said it was closed for remodeling. Remodeling was mispelled "remodling." There was no mention of rats.

The coney island which has been locked in fierce competition for decades with its next door neighbor, American Coney Island, was closed in September 2022 for several weeks because of rats.

In 2021, American and Lafayette Coney Islands in downtown Detroit made the list of Esquire magazine's "100 Restaurants America Can't Afford to Lose" during the Covid era.
