Indiana transplant and Traverse City resident Pete Buttigieg is expected to announce that he won't be running for the U.S. Senate, likely opening up a path for a potential presidential bid in 2028, The New York Times reports, citing three unnamed sources.

Buttigieg, the former transportation secretary, had been considering a run for Sen. Gary Peters' seat in 2026. Peters has announced that he will not seek re-election.

Buttigieg ran unsuccessfully for president in 2020 but was considered a legitimate contender at the time.

Buttigieg, who is married to Michigan-born Chasten Buttigieg, has two adopted children. If elected, he would be the first openly gay president.
