Tree falls on car in Kalamazoo County (Screenshot Wood TV video)
Mother Nature walloped Michigan's Lower Peninsula on Sunday with nasty thunderstorms that left three dead on the west side of the state and knocked out power for hundreds of thousands.
Thunderstorms, freezing rain, and high winds uprooted trees and damaged property. WOOD TV8 reported that a tree fell on a car in Climax, Kalamazoo County, killing three family members and hospitalizing three others in the family.
Early Monday morning, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy reported more than 180,000 customers without power.
DTE issued a statement on its website:
Our crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power to everyone impacted by Sunday's severe thunderstorms and high winds. Our Storm Response Team is laser focused on turning the lights back on for all customers affected by the storm because we know how challenging it is to be without electric service. We estimate that 95% of customers will be restored by the end of the day Monday.
Consumer Engery issued a statement:
The majority of Northern Michigan''s restoration is on track to be complete Tuesday, and the hardest hit areas Wednesday. With the severe weather we experienced Sunday evening, the crews that were pre-staged are now responding and will continue until the power is restored.
