A boy, Mubarak Walid, died after being hit by an ice cream truck Monday night on Detroit's west side.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. near Rutland Street and Diversey Avenue, according to WXYZ. WXYZ reported his age as 6 and WDIV and Fox 2 reported it as 4. Detroit Police on Tuesday night declined to disclose the age when questioned by Deadline Detroit.

The driver broke out into tears at the scene, WXYZ reports.

The station reports that the male driver remained at the scene, was cooperating with authorities, and was taken into custody for questioning. Police provided few details, only saying the child was under 10 years of age.

“This time of year with the weather breaking, it’s very important that everybody’s mindful that the children are out and they’re playing. If you see school buses and ice cream trucks, just slow down a little bit, look around, check your surroundings before proceeding past them," Detroit Police Department Capt. Shannon Hampton told reporters. "It’s a very tragic scene.”
