Common Cause, a nonprofit government watchdog group, is urging citizens to sign a petition to prevent President Trump and Congress from cutting funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), which includes WDET, Michigan Public radio, and Detroit PBS.
"Sign the Petition to Congress: Attacks on PBS and NPR are attempts to silence independent media. We must protect free, fact-based journalism and ensure access to trusted programming for all Americans," Common Cause said in a mass email.
"Friend, President Trump and his friends in Congress are escalating their war on public media – attempting to slash funding for our Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR)," the email said.
"Time after time, Americans consistently rank PBS and NPR as the most trustworthy networks for news and public affairs."
The email comes at a time when National Public Radio and three of its local stations have sued Trump, arguing that his executive order cutting funding to the 246-station network violates their free speech and relies on authority he does not have, the Associated Press reports.
Earlier this month, Trump instructed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and federal agencies to cease funding for NPR and PBS, either directly or indirectly, AP reports.
Trump and his supporters have aruged that the outlets are nothing more than propaganda tools for Democrats and liberals and deliver biased coverage..
