Congressman Shri Thanedar loves his McDonald's fries.
The photo from a member of Congress might have seemed a bit puzzling; nonetheless, it was pretty benign. Last Friday, Detroit Congressman Shri Thanedar posted a photo on Facebook of himself holding up an order of McDonald's french fries with the caption: "Love those McDonald's fries."
But many of the 143 comments, rather than weighing in on the pros and cons of McDonald's fries, mocked Thanedar and criticized him for voting in favor of a House resolution condemning antisemitism and expressing "gratitude" for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other law enforcement personnel. Michigan Democrats Haley Stevens and Kristen McDonald Rivet also voted in favor and were among 75 House Democrats who supported the resolution.
The comments -- a non sequitur? Perhaps. But commenters saw it as an opportunity to sound off on ICE and other issues.
