Geris Edward Gordon, 26, of Detroit, has been charged with failing to properly secure his gun after a 13-year-old neighbor fired the weapon, striking Gordon's 18-year-old brother in the wrist.

The incident occurred on Monday around 5:20 p.m. in an apartment in the 9100 block of Kercheval Street in Detroit.

Gordon’s 13-year-old neighbor was in the apartment handling the firearm when it discharged, injuring Gordon's brother, who was later treated at the hospital.

Gordon faces charges of firearms – safe storage violations – premises under individual’s control – minor present and injured self or another.

“I am again asking gun owners to safely store their weapons inside their homes — or wherever they have their weapons. This is not a hard ask, and compliance is very simple,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement.

Gordon was arraigned on Wednesday before Detroit 36th District Magistrate Judge Laura Echartea, who set a $25,000 personal bond, meaning he did not have to post any money.

A preliminary examination is scheduled for Aug. 1 at 8:45 a.m.
