Rocky's Peanut Co., a decades-long fixture in Detroit's Eastern Market at 2489 Russell St., and a must-visit over the years for many — particularly on Saturdays — is closing.
"It is with a heavy heart that, after many years, decades, and family generations, Rocky’s will be closing its doors," the company posted on Instagram. It plans to close by October.
The store sold nuts, candy, and spices in a warm, friendly setting. Brothers Rocky and Dominic Russo moved their grocery store to Eastern Market in 1971 and then, in 1981, to its current location.
The Instagram post says the building — along with fixtures, racks, carts, and shelving — is up for sale.
The owner, Patricia Russo, who took over the business from her father, Rocky, told WXYZ that running the store was very demanding. At 61, she said, "It's time to retire."
"From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank our incredible community — you’ve not just been customers, but have truly become part of our family," the Instagram posting said. Rocky’s has stood in Eastern Market for decades because of your love, loyalty, and countless shared memories."
"Rocky’s will always hold a special place in our hearts. We would love for you to share your favorite memories or photos with us as we say goodbye to this Detroit landmark. We can’t thank you enough for the decades of support and love."
