Rick Wershe Jr. on Fox 2
Richard Wershe Jr., aka "White Boy Rick," a teenage Detroit cocaine trafficker who spent 32 years in prison, tells Fox 2 that he's working on a new documentary on his life with Harold "Hype" Williams, a music video and film director and screenwriter.
"We started filming some in Detroit already at the auto show," he said. "We'll be filming in Miami, we're going to film some in the Caribbean. It's going to be good, a lot of things that have never come out... people that I was tied to and friends with."
It's not the first film on Wershe, now 56.
In 2017, a documentary, "White Boy," was released. It was directed by Shawn Rech, written by Brandon Kimber, Seth Ferranti, and Scott Burnstein and produced by Transition Studios.
The following year came the release of the Hollywood film "White Boy Rick," starring Matthew McConaughey, who played Wershe's father and the young actor Richie Merritt who played White Boy Rick. The New York Times described it as "fiction built on nonfiction."
The 2017 documentary was far better than the movie but didn't tell the whole story. The McConaughey film was based on Wershe's life but contained as much fiction as fact.
Wershe, who spends much of his time in Florida these days, owns a cannabis distribution business, "The 8th by White Boy Rick." He's also involved in prison reform and charitable organizations.
Wershe said he likes that in the documentary "we're in control of and will be 100% true."
