Highlands Detroit, which sits on floors 71 and 72 of the RenCen in downtown Detroit, will stay open until May 2027, Crain's Detroit Business reports.
The restaurant, which opened in 2019, is being forced to close due to plans by the building's owners, General Motors and Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock, to raze Towers 300 and 400 to make way for development along the riverfront.
The restaurant, run by James Beard Award–winning chef Shawn McClain, hopes to cash in before closing on two major events in 2027: the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four in early April and the annual Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, which is slated for late May.
“We’ve had an amazing run. Where things are at now, there will be an interruption, but in the meantime we’re still open despite the building’s quiet demeanor,” McClain said, according to Crain's. “Business is thriving on the 71st floor. The space is still iconic, historical, and one we cherish. A lot of people in the Detroit area hold the place near to their hearts. It’s a bit of a survival story, too. We opened three months before COVID, we’ve seen the main tenant leave, and we still love what we’re doing.”
