Teens running through downtown over the weekend
Tavuan Clark, 14, was in the hospital Tuesday recovering from a gunshot wound he received Sunday night during a Teen Takeover in downtown Detroit.
He tells the Detroit Free Press his group of friends got in a fight with another group after they pushed one of his friends off a Lime scooter. Gunfire broke out.
His mother, Tracey Clark, talked about the bullet that hit her son in the chest. He is recovering at Children's Hospital in Detroit.
"Quarter-of-an-inch to the left, he wouldn't be here," Clark, 46, told the Freep.
She described him as "sweet," "respectful," and "a big ol' teddy bear." She said she knew he was going downtown and told him to be home at 9 p.m., one hour before the city's official curfew. She thought it would be safe.
Mayor Mary Sheffield and Police Chief Todd Bettison have vowed to step up police patrols and crack down on any teen violence downtown.
