July 26, 2013, 7:01 AM

Stephen Henderson, head of the Detroit Free Press editorial page, had some fun with comic Stephen Colbert Thursday night when he appeared on the show to talk about the city's bankruptcy.

Henderson started out by giving Colbert a hoodie sweatshirt that said: "Detroit vs. Everybody." He said the sweatshirt sums up the local attitude.

Colbert responded: "I noticed this is a hoodie, are you trying to get me killed?"

Henderson told Colbert "you've been pretty hard on us in Detroit," to which Colbert said: "I've been pretty honest about Detroit. Pretty honest. Truth hurts."

The exchange was friendly and Colbert, in his trademark smart-aleck persona mentioned how much Bill Gates had done for malaria and suggested perhaps he could help Detroit as well.

"Have you guys thought about getting malaria?" Colbert asked. -- Allan Lengel
