Eastpointe Has A New Ordinance That Bans Walking In The Street

October 04, 2013, 10:20 AM

The Eastpointe City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits walking in the street where sidewalks exist.

"You need to stay off the street if there's a sidewalk available to you," Ronald LaForest, Eastpointe City Councilman, tells Anu Prakash of WXYZ-TV.

Eastpointe city council unanimously passed the ordinance. If you're in violation, it could cost you up to $155. If you don't pay, you could get up to 30 days and a $500 fine.

LaForest says the city has gotten a lot of complaints from drivers. "For the most part, they're afraid they're going to hit someone. It's a safety issue," he says.
He says walking in the middle of the street is a problem involving teenagers and adults too.
