7+ Awesome Things To Do In Detroit This Weekend

December 14, 2013, 5:20 PM

Holiday Food Bazaar

The Holiday Food Bazaar brings the best kind of holiday shopping to Jefferson Chalmers-- the kind you can eat. Grab lunch, stock your pantry or buy some gifts at this east side market Friday or Saturday. Dozens of local food vendors will be there selling delicious goodies.

See it on E. Jefferson just west of the Grosse Pointe border.

Southwest Detroit Festival

The event features performances by the Matrix Theater Company, an artists marketplace at 555 Gallery, a rummage swap, Christmas tree sale and whatever "Carol-oake" is.

Check it out Saturday.

Fisher Family Fun Day

The Fisher Building is hosting a multitude of activities Saturday, including a guided architectural tour, finger puppet making and Christmas card decorating. Floats from Thanksgiving parades' past will be on display in the lobby and an eight-foot-tall Lego model of the Fisher will be on display in Pure Detroit (seen on the left).

Find all the details here.

Workshop Grand Opening

The Fisher Building's new store "Workshop" hosts an opening celebration to coincide with Family Fun Day. See furniture made from materials salvaged from Detroit's abandoned homes. Plus, see a new wallpaper collection from Workshop and the Detroit Wallpaper Co. based on designs found in the Fisher building!

Check it out all day Saturday.

Comedy Theater Takes On Frosty The Snowman.

The Go Comedy! Improv Theater in Ferndale puts on a production of "Frosty" Saturday. In it, Frosty the snowman comes back to his hometown 10 years later to find all his little friends have grown up and are in their not-so-innocent college phases. Grab a drink from their bar, sit down and get ready for a hearty giggle.

Grand Band

This concert is like dueling pianos times three. Six pianists perform simultaneously in a piano sextet at the DIA, doing music by Philip Glass, Simeon ten Holt, Julia Wolfe, Kate Moore and others. It's mesmerizing ("the Traveling Wilburys of NY's new-music piano scene") and in a great location.

See them on YouTube. Find event details here.

Guided Detroit Shopping Excursion

If you want to shop in Detroit, but aren't sure where to go or how to get there, this event is for you. The Detroit Bus Compnay is holding a guided shopping excursion that will bus participants to Easter Market, the Livernois Avenue of Fashion and two location in Midtown. Even if you aren't buying, this is a great way to see some new developments in three Detroit neighborhoods.

Get tickets here.

Bonuses:

  • Detroit Mercantile in Eastern Market hosts 40 local makers for a shopping extravaganza on Saturday,
  • A "Sick Of Holiday Parties" party Saturday night at The Old Miami.
  • Mosaic Youth Theater brings "Woodward Wonderland" back to the DIA through Sunday afternoon. Details are here.
