WXYZ reports that Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson was found passed out at the wheel at traffic light in Southfield Sunday night and was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

The station reports that he remains in the custody of Southfield Police, and a $500 bond has been set.

The incident, according to WXYZ, happened around 7:30 p.m. at a traffic light at 8 Mile near the southbound Southfield Rd. service drive. He was in a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria.

Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones issued a joint statement Monday morning:

“We have recently learned that misdemeanor charges are being sought against Councilman Scott Benson.  We have no first-hand facts about the matter and we will not speculate. Instead we will let the judicial system proceed in its normal course.  In the meantime, we will remain focused on getting the City’s business done.”

His bio on his website says:

Scott has spent time in the nonprofit, military, public and private sectors managing and facilitating small and large scale projects. He is a graduate of Wayne State University and Hampton University, as well as the National Defense University and the US Coast Guard’s Officer Candidate School.
