His endorsements comes as little surprise.
The Detroit News reports that ex-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is endorsing Gov. Rick Snyder for re-electon, and Rep. Gary Peters for U.S. Senate.
Bloomberg hosted a fundraiser in New York for Snyder earlier this year, and his Political Action Committee is donating money to the Snyder campaign.
Bloomberg, a former Democrat and Republican is who is now an Independent, is looking to promote candidates this year who think independently.
Chad Livengood and David Shepardson of the Detroit News write:
Bloomberg’s Independence USA political action committee this week launched a $2.3 million TV ad buy on behalf of Snyder, but hasn’t yet decided to run ads for Peters, said Stu Loeser, a spokesman for Bloomberg — a Democrat turned Republican turned independent.
The News reports that Bloomberg supports Snyder because of his efforts to turn around the economy and his support of education and immigration reform. He's backing Peters because of his "pretty well-deserved reputation as one of its most independent and moderate leaders” and his support of gun rights and women's reproductive rights, the News reports.
Mark Schauer, Snyder's opponent, tried to spin the Bloomberg endorsement.
“It’s no surprise that Rick Snyder is turning to a New York billionaire to help cover up his record of cutting over $1 billion from education and raising taxes on seniors,” said Cathy Bacile Cunningham, a Schauer campaign spokeswoman, according to the News.. “Now we know why Gov. Snyder skipped out on road funding negotiations this spring to meet behind closed doors with Michael Bloomberg in New York. This is just another reminder that Rick Snyder’s policies work for the wealthy, but not the rest of Michigan."
