Ibrahim Algahim delivers controversial remark

Hamtramck made history by electing the nation's first majority Muslim city council last Tuesday.

Over the the years, the city's Polish population has been been shrinking and the Muslim population growing. That has created some sensitivities and tension.

In fact during the election, a flyer circulated that said: "Get the Muslim Out of Hamtramck. Let's take back our community."

Now a comment from a Muslim community organizer may divide the community further, Fox 2's Randy Wembly reports.

"Today we show the Polish and everybody else that we are united," Ibrahim Algahim, a member of the Yemeni community, says in the cell phone video.

Cathie Lisinki-Gordon, a former  council member,  was one of Tuesday's losers and was surprised and unhappy with the comment, Fox 2 addss.

"I'm shocked that he said that. I'm a very good friend of his," she said. "I cannot believe that he would ever profile any select group. Especially when his community has felt ostracized and profiled for many years."

Muslim Saad Almasmari, the top vote-getter Tuesday, isn't pleased with the comment.

"I don't believe in that," he tells Fox 2.  "And as a candidate, as a city council member, I'm going to work for everybody, represent everybody, because I got elected for everybody."
