Cafe D'Mongo's Speakeasy at 1439 Griswold in downtown Detroit has been described as a "hiipster haven," a speakeasy with antique furniture snuggled in a block lined with a synagogue and a cool coffee shop called the Urban Bean Co.
The man behind it all is Larry Mongo, a first-rate character known for his mythical tale telling.
Before it was D'Mongo's, it was Cafe Joseph for about 12 years, a place Mongo says catered to black politicians and gangsters. He closed down the joint for about 10 years and re-opened in 2007, initially just on Friday nights. Now, its open on Friday and Saturday nights.
The joint has been written up in many publications including Men's Journal and Los Angeles Times, and was featured on the Esquire Network as one of Best Bars in America.
And it's attracted such stars as Ryan Gosling and Quentin Tarantino.
Deadline Detroit's Allan Lengel recently sat down with Mongo for a little chat.
