Vendor Norman Shy was the masterminded behind a Detroit kickback scheme involving 12 school principals and a school administrator.

The school officials signed bogus invoices for Shy for $2.7 million in undelivered school supplies from 2009-14.  In turn, he paid about $900,000 in kickbacks.

CNBC features Shy and the school officials in an episode airing Monday at 10 p.m. on, appropriately named "American Greed."

Shy, 75, is serving five years in a medium-security  federal prison in Indiana. Other defendants drew at least one year in prison.
