Detroit Rap artist Phillip "Peezy" Peaks, 29, is recovering in the hospital after being shot multiple times at a Warren gas station early Sunday morning a short time after winning $2,000 in a rap battle, Mitch Hotts of The Macomb Daily writes. He is in stable condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Peaks was shot in the arm and chest.

"This is kind of a strange one," Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said Monday. Hotts reports:

Police were called to a Citgo gas station in the 5200 block of Eight Mile Road, west of Mound, about 3:30 a.m. for a report of an attempted carjacking and armed robbery.

Officers found Peaks, in his 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, who told them he had stopped at the gas station to let his passenger go inside to purchase cigarettes. He was sitting in his car waiting for the passenger when an unknown masked black male dressed in black approached him and demanded money.

The gunman fired one shot at Peaks hitting him in the shoulder and the bullet continued into his chest cavity, Dwyer said. Peaks then handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and was shot a second time in the arm. Dwyer confirmed the victim had money on him from the rap contest earlier that night in Detroit.
