Anyone who lives in the Detroit knows how outrageously expensive car insurance can be. Mayor Mike Duggan makes another effort to tackle that issue.
Duggan, along with eight citizens, filed a lawsuit Thursday against the state's insurance commissioner. They ask a federal judge to declare Michigan's compulsory no-fault auto insurance law unconstitutional in an effort to pressure lawmakers to amend the law, Chad Livengood of Crain's Detroit Business reports.
The auto insurance law "has become unconstitutionally unaffordable" with premiums that are not fair and equitable for Detroiters, who face the highest insurance rates in the nation, the case says.
Because state law mandates every Michigan vehicle owner to have no-fault coverage, the lawsuit adds, "the state must ensure that coverage is available at fair and equitable rates."n
