Nearly six months after an embittered Detroit businessman accused Detroit mayor Mike Duggan of an affair, the mayor's wife has filed for divorce.

The filing was reportedly submitted Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Duggan and wife Lori Maher released this statement:

Life is a journey with many twists and turns. Today, a new chapter begins for the two of us. We have decided to divorce. This painful decision has not been made lightly. On the contrary, we have had many serious discussions, have sought out guidance, but in the end, feel this is the best decision for both of us. We soon may not be a married couple, but we remain in close contact and we are first and foremost parents. We will forever protect and be present together in the lives of our children and grandchildren.

We do ask that you respect our privacy during this very difficult time. We will not comment further. We will continue to be supportive of each other, of our family and of the citizens of Detroit.

Duggan's alleged affair with a Wayne State University medical researcher was brought to light by Businessman Bob Carmack, who had a private investigator tail the mayor and in November aired footage that purported to show Duggan speeding to Hassan's house in Wixom. Duggan and Hassan were seen going in or out of the house at separate times.

The rumored affair sparked a Free Press investigation that alleged that Duggan gave preferential treatment to a public health program run by Hassan. The Detroit Office of the Inspector General is now investigating.

Duggan has never addressed the allegations head on, saying simply he will never discuss his personal life. He and Maher defended their marriage in a joint statement when the allegations first cropped up.
