Whitmer brings on ex-Buttigieg aide as profile rises

April 22, 2020, 8:46 AM

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has recruited a press secretary fresh off the presidential campaign trail as her national profile rises and Joe Biden considers her for VP.

The Detroit News reports the Whitmer administration has tapped Chris Meagher — the press secretary who helped oversee Pete Buttigieg's rise from unknown small-town mayor to household name — to help with communications. Meagher previously helped a U.S. senator get elected in Montana and has worked for state Democratic Party outfits across the country.

Meagher joins the Whitmer team as a contractor to "assist us with national press and work with [the health department] on messaging,” the office tells The News. He does not have a specific title.

Whitmer has not publicly said whether she'd serve as Biden's running mate if selected. Biden has promised to pick a woman and said recently that he's been eyeing Whitmer for months.
