Ex-state Sen. Morris "Mo" Hood III of Detroit died Monday from coronavirus, The Detroit News reports. He was 54.

Hood, who served in the Michigan House from 2003-08 and the Senate from 2011-18, had been suffering from the virus and went back on a ventilator a few weeks ago, Bill Nowling, a Wayne County spokesman, told the paper.

Hood, a Detroit Democrat, worked most recently for Wayne County in state government relations.

"I consider myself very lucky to have served with Mo Hood and to call him a friend," said Mark Meadows, a former Lansing area politician and state official said on Facebook. "Probably not as lucky as his Detroit House and Senate Districts were though. He was a terrific legislator and was respected from the UP to the Ohio border. If memory serves me he was an honorary Yooper. He was also a terrific bowler and he used to organize legislative bowling events!

"RIP my friend. I only wish that the virus was not preventing more than 10 people at your service. There are thousands who want to be there"

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans issued a statement:

“Morris served the State of Michigan admirably in both the House and the Senate for nearly two decades, and recently served as a valued member of my administration. He was the very definition of a public servant, one who dedicated his life to improving the lives of others and bettering his community."
