Detroit's Greektown Casino to permanently cut at least 600 jobs

June 17, 2020, 9:49 AM

Greektown Casino reportedly will lay off more than 600 workers come September, according to a letter sent to the state and reviewed by WXYZ.

The Detroit News reports the letter says the permanent job losses are "the unfortunate result of Covid-19 related business circumstances that were sudden, dramatic and beyond our control."

"The impact on our business was not reasonably foreseeable until now. We simply could not foresee, that the initial closures of our properties, that were issued by one or two states for a limited period of time, ultimately spread throughout all states in which we operate and eventually be extended, interrupting almost all business and travel temporarily."

The casino was last year sold by Dan Gilbert's Jack Gaming to New York-based Vici Properties for $1 billion.

Detroit's casinos have been closed since March as a result of the pandemic.
