Play Ball: Tigers Go into Tonight's Home Opener with Winning Streak

July 27, 2020, 7:31 AM

Strange times.

For one, the Detroit Tigers are on a rare winning streaking after taking the last two out of three games from Cincinnati Reds. They are 2-1.

Now comes the home opener Monday at 7 p.m. against the Kansas City Royals on Fox Sports Detroit. This day used to be like a holiday in Detroit. Not this time.

No roar of the fans, although the local station plays taped noise to simulate it. No smell of grilled hot dogs and beer.

Before Monday's game, the team will honor Kaline with a ceremony, a flag reading "KALINE" on the flagpole in center field, and commemorative jewels on the bases, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Freep columnist Jeff Seidel writes:

This will be a home opener with no real home-field advantage.

Rushing down to Detroit to fill up the streets would be irresponsible. Crowding into bars could turn this into a super spreader event.

It’s just not the risk. So stay home, people.

Just this once.
