Detroit Digest: Hygrade Deli Still Serves a Tasty Nosh on Michigan Avenue

August 01, 2020, 7:31 AM

Since 1972 the Litt family has operated Hygrade Deli at 3640 Michigan Ave. near W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit. It's a truly legit Jewish deli that serves the classics -- corned beef, pastrami, salami and reuben sandwiches on rye with a first-rate old dill pickle.

Detroit has a long history of great Jewish delis. Many are gone, including Sol's and Leon & Lefkofsky, which competed with one another at 7 Mile and Schaefer in Detroit's old Jewish neighborhood. The majority of them, such as Stage and Steve's, can now be found in the Oakland County suburbs.

Stuart Litt has been running the deli on Michigan Avenue since he took over from his ailing father in 1977. Besides top-ratee food, it's worth noting that some scenes from the 2016 film "The Pickle Recipe" were filmed there.

Carlos Parisi of Deadline Detroit's "Detroit Digest" stopped by the other day for a major nosh. It's one of his favorite sandwich joints.
