Repubican state Sen. Tom Barrett, an ardent opponent of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's strict Covid policies, has contracted the virus, The Detroit News reports. He was screened because of his service in the Army National Guard.
“Thankfully I do not have any significant symptoms at this time, and I will be self-isolating according to medical guidelines," said Barrett, who got the test results on Sunday. "I have done my best to make contact with those I have been around in the past couple weeks so that they may also seek medical advice.
Barrett, who is married and has three children, represents the Charlotte area in mid-Michigan.
He sponsored a bill in April to repeal one of the two state laws that allow the governor to declare emergencies and implement restrictions during the pandemic.
He is the third state lawmaker to contract the disease. The other two are Democrats.
