Just as detectives can legally deceive suspects during interrogation, traffic law enforcers can dress like road builders to trick drivers.
Novi police in orange vests and hard hats are holding radar devices, not shovels, in reduced-speed construction zones this week. The department tweets Thursday afternoon about its tactic:
Thus far our construction zone traffic safety initiative on Novi Rd & Cranbrooke Dr has resulted in 16 stops, 12 citations & 1 arrest. Motorists must slow down for the safety of the road construction workers. #ThisIsYourWarning #SlowDown @WWJTraffic @cityofnovi @MDOT_MetroDet pic.twitter.com/FJM9RVaXed

The decoy operation is underway today on Novi Road above I-96, the site of overpass repairs and traffic light maintenance, and along Cranbrooke Drive, a residential street being rebuilt between 10 Mile Road and Village Wood Road.
