The Detroit Medical Center is abandoning plans for a sports medicine facility in the District Detroit, costing the Ilitch group a marquee tenant at one of the few buildings it's actually constructing near Little Caesars Arena.

The medical system confirmed the news Tuesday, citing changes to the industry resulting from the coronavirus.
The $70-million building, whose shell appears about half-done, is between LCA and the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business on Woodward. DMC was to occupy the top two floors, serving Red Wings and Pistons players, among others.
Other businesses expected to lease space in the five-story building include a Grand Rapids law firm and Boston Consulting Group. The Ilitch group tells Crain's the building is on track to open next year.
