Detroit Digest: We Check Out Tasty Vegan Soul Food -- a Burger, Mac-n-cheese and Catfish

December 06, 2020, 11:13 PM

Detroit Vegan Soul promotes itself as "Detroit's first 100 percent vegan soul food restaurant. Fresh, mostly organic and completely plant based food."

Owners Erika Boyd, the executive chef, and Kirsten Ussery, the general manager, opened at 8029 Agnes St. on Detroit's east side in 2013 after operating as a catering service. In 2017, they opened a second Detroit location at 19614 Grand River Ave. in Rosedale Park.

The menu includes a soul food platter consisting of mac-n-cheese, smoked collards, maple glazed yams, black eyed peas and a cornbread muffin; vegan catfish, soups, salads, seiten pepper steak, a house-made veggie millet patty burger and a Philly cheesesteak sub.

Detroit Digest hosts Carlos Parisi and Kyle Sammy stopped by the east-side location for tastings.

Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Orders currently taken online only.
