Whitmer apologizes for violating own pandemic rules with About a dozen-person restaurant gathering

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer broke her own pandemic orders when she gathered this weekend with a dozen others at an East Lansing restaurant.

The photo was posted on Facebook — and promptly deleted — by a member of the group on Saturday and picked up by conservative outlet Breitbart. Whitmer's chief operations officer, Tricia Foster, was also among those gathered at Landshark Bar & Grill.

Indoor dining rules currently allow parties no larger than six.

Whitmer swiftly apologized in a response to The Detroit News:

"Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been committed to following public health protocols," Whitmer said Sunday in a statement. "Yesterday, I went with friends to a local restaurant. As more people arrived, the tables were pushed together. Because we were all vaccinated, we didn't stop to think about it.

"In retrospect, I should have thought about it. I am human. I made a mistake, and I apologize."

The outing came two days after Whitmer said gathering restrictions would not ease until June 1. Pandemic orders are set to end a month later.
